Review of Cake (2014) by Bluesette M — 24 Jan 2015
A middling, tiresome movie that shows the melodrama rather than the inherent depth of chronic pain and psychological breakdown. Aniston's performance, however, attempts to save the flailing film and takes certain gambles that may allow her to tread deeper waters in future.
However, bit parts from other talents could have transformed this cry for help into a wonderful ensemble film that has character. Drawn-out scenes call to mind moments in the supermarket where you attempt to remember what to buy next.
Several scenes include Aniston internally throttling herself in pain as she lies down in the foreground of a subtle musical score. Throw away those parts, any you have yourself a 20-minute movie.
