Review of Cairo Time (2009) by Deanna C — 01 Oct 2010
The premise of an...involvement between a married American woman and an Egyptian man seems like the basic ingredient for an embarrassingly clichéd film. â??Cairo Timeâ?? is stylish and smart enough to use such a premise only to frame an insightful story about society and character. The â??holiday romanceâ?? is subtle and serves only as a channel for the main character to question her own life and choices.
As a passionate â??Star Trek Deep Space Nineâ?? fan I'm always happy to see Alexander Siddig. And I can say with genuine conviction that he's completely wonderful as the male lead. When he's paired with the always brilliant Patricia Clarkson it's clear that the screen is glowing with creative talent throughout the picture.
â??Cairop Timeâ?? shows Cairo in its beauty but is equally ready to point out some less-flattering aspects of Egyptian life and society. Ruba Nadda comments subtly but openly on war, inequality and the position of women in the Middle East. This is done in an observant, mostly show-don't-tell way, but some dialog between the main characters also drops little seeds of argumentation into the viewer's mind. Sleek, beautiful, clever.
