Review of Cairo Time (2009) by Phillip D — 01 Jan 2011
Cairo Time (2009) 5 stars.
CAIRO TIME is stunning in its simplicity and quiet passion. The silent moments of this lovely film speak volumes. Against the background of a beautiful piano melody, the viewer is taken to Cairo along with 40-something magazine editor Juliette (a magnificent Patricia Clarkson). Juliette has planned to meet her diplomat husband for a vacation, but he is long overdue from Gaza. Instead she is introduced to a gentle, dignified and graceful friend of her husband's, Tareq (handsome and chivalrous Alexander Siddig). So this story is about Juliette and Tareq, two ordinary people who become extraordinary - at least to one another. The languid pace of this film may turn off some viewers, but director Ruba Nadda has created a lush, serene and subtle romantic drama that is simply lyrical in its unhurried unfolding. And the film asks the following question: Can the people we meet and the choices we make change our lives? Juliette and Tareq will answer that question not with their words, but with their actions. If you need adventure and a fast-paced romp, this one is not for you. If, however, you enjoy a quiet love story with exquisite photography and a gorgeous soundtrack, don't pass up CAIRO TIME. 12-12-10.
