Review of Café Society (2016) by Joanna H — 17 Sep 2016
I watched this one day after seeing "Don't Think Twice," and similarly it left me feeling a little depressed about my impending future as a 30-something... however, it also has more glamor, bigger laughs, and of course: classic Woody Allen neuroticism.
I feel that the bar Woody Allen has been raised to from the success of films like Midnight in Paris & Blue Jasmine overshadows a lot of his annual projects that are similarly witty and delightful, but not as cinema-friendly.
I have been a fan for a long time, and I enjoy many of the duds. This one, however, I would consider an upper-middling mark. Much more enjoyable than last year's film. (For those of you who forgot, Joaquin Pheonix dying on an elevator didn't do much for me.
) My mom immediately called me to talk over Cafe Society and say that she thought Blake Lively was wonderful and she hopes Jesse Eisenberg's character was able to get over his narcissism to appreciate what he has.
I have to agree with that sentiment. Beautiful costumes, wonderful set, good acting, fun film.
