Review of Café Society (2016) by Matthew F. J — 29 Dec 2016
It's been a good while since I got carried away by a Woody Allen film. This new opus, is a wonderful tour of the old Hollywood serving as the perfect backdrop for this romantic comedy clearly showing that life can reserve a few surprises when it comes to love and no matter choice we make we may always end up thinking, what if?
It's a bit of a catch 22 but Mister Allen has crafted a beautiful film, very well shot, with an impressive fluidity of camera that at times reminded me DePalma.
I loved the soundtrack of course and the voice over threaded nicely this old fashioned but modernized fairy tale.
The choice of the cast was equally great, every actors nailing their parts with an interesting nuance.
The colors and lighting of the film were amazing, it was so beautifully crafted, settled and edited.
A little jewel of film making like we see too rarely. Woody Allen may not always hit the right notes with his many films but when he does, he truly does. One of the top ten films of 2016.
