Review of Café Society (2016) by Shane A — 29 Jul 2016
Cafe Society was Fantastic! Woody Allen knocked it out of the park. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart are remarkable together, and Steve Carrel is stellar as can be. (I adore Kristen Stewart, so My Kstew bias aside, she seriously stepped up big time for this one).
The direction was so, well...Woody Allen. Loose and awkwardly realistic dialogue. Sometimes you forget that they're acting and just feel like you're there.
Aspects of the story I can relate to. We've all questioned love and choices. This is a subtly hilarious look at it, but with endless underlying sadness and emotion that's more earned by performance than just words.
The sets and backgrounds are perfect and the era is captured. I suggest you see this while its out (tho in very limited theaters) it's a welcome break from the summer blockbusters, and a breath of fresh air loaded with charm, integrity, and elegance.
Expect an Oscar buzz for the cast and crew of this one. It's well earned. A+.
