Allen seems very interested in the time period and not much interested in telling us a compelling story other than a 90 minute exercise in longing and regret. Still, he knows how to write and direct. Best line (and the best part of the movie): Aristotle said the unexamined life is not worth living, but the examined life is no bargain.
