Review of Caesar and Cleopatra (1945) by Mec R — 12 Feb 2008
I love both Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh. Movies based on plays with witty dialogue in historical settings (The Lion in Winter) are often really enjoyable. Caesar & Cleopatra is hit and miss, for the most part.
Like most of the color movies of the 1940s it lacks the exuberance of early color (GWTW, Adventures of Robin Hood) pictures - and understandably, but it does detract from the lavishness. Shaw's play is clearly not historical but political, and that's probably a big part of why this is so shaky.
Good performances, especially from Rains. Too bad about his make up.
