Review of Cadillac Records (2008) by Eric K — 17 Mar 2009
I didn't know much about black pioneer singers like Etta James (Beyonce Knowles in her best performance yet), Chuck Berry (Mos Def), and Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright). Instead, the movie focuses on the Jewish entrepreneur, Leonard Chess (played unconvincingly by a bland Adrien Brody) and his efforts to build a black studio and market these artists to mainstream America in the 1960s.
It's not a bad movie but the screenplay is basically "bits and pieces" of everyone. My favorite performer was Columbus Short as a slightly mad Little Water--he gives the movie an edge. Now, that I'm introduced to these great singers, I'll have to listen to their music more.
