Review of Cadillac Records (2008) by Andrew F — 28 Mar 2009
I may be in the minority on this but I was really finding adrien brody sexy as get out when I was watching this film. and I love jeffrey wright's acting the more I see him dig in to a role and take it to places it may or may not deserve.
but that wasn't enough to save this movie for me. the main thrust of the film is not to explore a very crucial aspect of r&b (as it should be) as it's the perpetuation of r&b musicians as a bunch of misguided savants (save willie dixon and howlin wolf--but you don't see them that much).
and I had real big issues with the portrayal of etta james as a voluptuous tragic mulatto. come on! if beyonce knowles needs to show the world she can act by playing this very limited stereotype, let her do it with another show biz figure.
better yet--remake 'sparkle'--god forbid. let her play sister. sister gets hooked on smack and gets to sing a gut wrenching ballad. but etta james is ten times more interesting then what is here.
do some research!
