Review of Cadillac Records (2008) by Glen O — 30 Dec 2010
There's some great music in this movie and some great vocal performances from Beyonce Knowles as Etta James, but it suffers from a lack of narrative cohesion, feeling more like a series of musical vignettes.
Music history lovers will enjoy the personal dynamics between the wild men of the blues, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, et al. Mos Def is perfectly cast as a young Chuck Berry. The film neatly chronicles the black diaspora from the sharecropping south to the urban north where the magic of the black wax changed the world.
