Review of Caddyshack (1980) by Forrest P — 11 Mar 2010
What I loved about Caddyshack is that even though I was not laughing hysterically every minute as I thought I would, I was still thoroughly entertained from start to finish. This movie, by its very nature is more of a sports movie than a sports comedy, but it has an undeniably tender side to it that I couldn't throw away.
Caddyshack was not nearly as hilarious as I thought it would be. The jokes are funny, but didn't really make me laugh, which was weird. I honestly think this movie works best as a goofy sports movie than as a comedy.
Rodney Dangerfield got the most laughs in the movie. His character was the most well written and had some of the best dialogue (although I can't help but wonder how much of it he made up himself).
Chevy Chase (who I saw in Christmas Vacation and loved him in) really has a good on screen persona in this movie. His character is oddly charming, charismatic, and just plain fun to watch.
And of course, Bill Murray plays our token screwball, but he plays the part well and very genuinely. I actually felt like this guy could have been a real guy; he played out his frustrations with that little gopher so freaking well.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The characters are fun, the dialogue is creative, and the whole atmosphere of the movie is just undeniably likable. My only complaint is that I wasn't laughing as much as I would have liked, but the movie, oddly, got the same mood across anyway.
8/10.
