Review of Caché (2005) by Ricky D — 18 May 2008
Billed as one of the greatest Thrillers ever made I was drawn to this film. After seeing it I sometimes wonder if critics know what they are talking about. The lack of substance in a film is to them is what they call intelligent and subtle.
But now I am convinced that this is clique mentality. This film is a perfect film of something very little. You would get just as much enjoyment out of watching CCTV footage of Oxford Circus. This film has no fault in any department.
Nor does it have any acheivements. The success of this film is on the basis of reality or what is termed as real. The point obviously is how peoples minds can be provoked into becoming unstable using very little provokation.
If that facinates you then by all means see this film. To me this film is the execution of not trying, not venturing, not engaging then congratulating itself for being controlled. The film starves you of incident then gives you one brutal moment.
Like Eddie Murphy once said - when you have been lost in the desert for so long the first glass of water you have is the best glass of water you have ever tasted. With one brutal incident the film ups the stakes that - in itself - has little impact on the filmsoverall style.
This was extremely dissapointing and vastly overated.
