Review of Caché (2005) by Peter A — 22 Apr 2009
On a basic level this is a menacing drama with basic themes of surveillance, paranoia, guilt and responsibility. But Haneke has also instilled the film with deeper ideas exploring race relations in France and the attitudes of its middle class bourgeoisie.
It is a dark and slow-paced (but not lethargic) film; not one you would necessarily call enjoyable but certainly one filled with great performances, especially from its leads, Auteuil and Binoche, and superb direction and cinematography.
Not for everyone, but Hidden is a prime example of the dark psychological and ultimately thought-provoking thriller that the French do so well and Hollywood would never attempt.
