Review of Caché (2005) by Cong Han L — 02 Sep 2009
One can see what Michael Haneke is trying to achieve in this film, and he succeeds. Using surveillance as an internal mirror of sorts is a meaningful thought, but all too frequently Haneke seems to be making sure that the audience is aware that he is fucking around with the characters (and us). This conscious, clever (in both senses of the word) approach permeates every frame, and turns the final shot into one that could either be very meaningful or just plain pointless depending on your point of view.
Regardless of whether you can stand Haneke and his approach, ultimately, like all real art, it is capable of provoking real thought. Emotion however, seems just out of reach.
