Review of Caché (2005) by Shelly — 05 Oct 2009
Typical Haneke - no score, complete realism, takes that seem to stretch on forever, and a cinematography style that makes you think the whole crew must have gone off for a sandwich and just left the camera rolling in their absence.
I love Haneke, but his filmmaking is as static as his camera work. I think his unflinching, voyeuristic style is well-suited to Funny Games, and, through the subject matter of Cache it fits as well but somehow it made more of an impact with Funny Games.
So much of Cache feels unnecessary and underdeveloped. But it feels real. And I guess real life doesn't have to be necessary or developed, and, in the end, we don't get answers.
