Review of Caché (2005) by Helen L — 14 Aug 2010
Having watched the white ribbon (which I thought was amazing) somebody recommended I should watch this. I did...
It seems this movie has the same mysterious qualities as the first. That it doesn't give any conclusive answers just enough to get people talking. Is that what Haneke is doing - messing with us? I have to admit I kind of liked it when watching the white ribbon. A movie which is extremely obvious would be bad but a movie in which you are being teased with lots of scenes that could mean something but not necessarily just leaves me feeling a little like its pointless trying to arrive at a solid conclusion as there just isn't enough to make one - and if there was the movie wouldn't be as intriguing. Its a method troubled teenagers use to get attention they try and capture your attention by saying something mysterious, intriguing and possibly troubling almost sinister. As soon as you become aware of that you stop being intrigued because its a dead end, or rather without elaboration it leads to an almost infinite number of paths of explanation which is in many ways the equivalent to not leading anywhere.
I think I'm done with Haneke'esque movies. But I still think you should watch it if you haven't. It does stay with you.
