Review of Caché (2005) by Gii B — 19 Sep 2010
Ok so Iâ??m quite a big fan of foreign film. I love the fact that anything goes and Iâ??m not having to be limited to the usual offerings that Hollywood seem to churn out every year - Yes the good guys can die at the end and Yes it all doesnâ??t have to have a happy ending when Iâ??m watching them.
So I had heard a lot of buzz around Hidden when it was at the cinema but didnâ??t get the chance to see it so eventually bought a copy on DVD to give it a try. Well it starts out with great promise. A family being stalked by some mysterious stranger sending them recordings of their home from a camera placed somewhere outside.
The tension at the start is really gripping and the acting from our two main stars (Auteuil & Binoche) is well above average and Iâ??m believing it all as it unfolds. The problem is that it all becomes very tedious as we are led down the same path on a few occasions during the movie with no closer resolution to why this family are being targeted.
Some characters float in and out and it gives us the chance to quiz to try and determine if they are indeed the culprit but again with no real concrete answers. By about an hour and a bit in to the film I was getting really bored watching the same thing again and again and just wanted it to be overâ?¦then it was, just like that OVER! Up come the credits with NO resolution what so ever.
OK I said and went to bed unsatisfied. I woke the next morning at 5am with the film going around and around in my head. Determined to have that answer that I so badly needed to lay the film to rest when it hit me - this is what the director was looking for, he wanted this reaction because why should there be any answers why cant it just be a case of we will never find out the reason this family have been the subject of harassment.
Just because Hollywood likes to wrap up its films in a nice big bow, obviously life doesnâ??t work that way - I have just become a victim of neat endings in my life. Having said that it still doesnâ??t mean that I thought it was a fabulous film.
Yes it gave me some thinking time - been a while since a film has done that BUT I was still bored through the last 40 mins and lost my sense of caring what was going on so I doubt I would want to watch it again.
