Review of Caché (2005) by Kevin G — 02 Feb 2011
I thought this was fascinating and provocative in so many ways. While I can certainly understand why some of it could be perceived as boring, I found it extremely tense. Just the concept alone of strange videos monitoring you and being sent to you with no form of notice is disturbing to me.
The story itself may not be all it's cracked up to be and the payoff is far from being satisfying, but it almost doesn't matter because what this film creates is a sense of paranoia and mystery that is truly terrifying.
The film's ambiguous style doesn't give away many answers and leaves even more questions than when it started, which is what makes it so very effective in many ways. In some aspects this makes the film manipulative and disingenuous, but it could also be considered even more powerful because of that.
It clearly takes cue from Hitchcock and several other films and does something uniquely it's own, which to me is reason enough to watch it at least once.
