Review of Caché (2005) by Mauricio A — 25 Apr 2011
Brilliantly structured if incredibly tedious in parts. Although continental European films like to break with convention and have more open endings, it felt as if this was needlessly done in this film. Or perhaps the ending wasn't as open as it seems but the explanation was so subtle, you blink and you miss it.
However, the acting is astounding and the overall feel of the family life in the film is brilliantly true and relatable.
That said, I was constantly waiting for something MORE from all of this. Everything acts as a flawless build up to something bigger and yet it simply rolls credits just when you think it's going to begin the great denoument.
On the other hand, I somehow can't bring myself to hate this film and I don't know why. There is an x-factor which makes me think that I'll learn to love it the more I try to hate it.
