Review of Caché (2005) by Muhammad G — 10 Dec 2011
On second viewing this film reveals again that Haneke is massively talented and the first two thirds are exhilarating. The film is fundamentally a bold metaphor for a part of France's sinister past at its epicentre, but its enduring problem is that the metaphor overpowers the plot and leaves the viewer without a shred of resolution and too many unanswered questions.
I still feel frustrated that Haneke leads me up the garden path in plot terms and doesn't open the gate at the end, but he doesn't make popcorn movies by any stretch of the imagination, and he wants to challenge his viewer intellectually.
It's a frustrating watch, but much of the filmmaking on display here is nothing short of genius.
