Review of Caché (2005) by Seth C — 22 May 2013
A comment on the voyeurism of film, conventional narrative, and perhaps an allusion to the forgotten crimes of history; it is compelling and creepy filmmaking. Shot throughout with seemingly hidden camera still-shots, the glimpse of these characters feels like objective near-realism.
..it is anything but that beneath the surface. By the time you realize what's going on in the opening shot of the film, nothing presented on screen (There is no distinction between the film (shot by Haneke) or the "hidden camera video tape" the characters watch) can really be trusted and you want to analyze every frame for 'whodunit' clues, which I think is Haneke's whole point.
I've never seen a film that makes every frame, character, POV etc. a suspect.
