Fosse's directing can be so amazing here it's not surprising he beat out Coppola for the Godfather a best director (though I still go for FF on it). this is one of the most natural and naturaly entertaining musicals ever, integrating the musical numbers without losing any sense of the reality of the story.
A little of it veers toward becoming soap-operaish (i.e. "Will she keep the baby, will the Jews marry"), but it's never less than absorbing, usually funny, and terrific pre-WW2 drama.
