Review of Cabaret (1981) by Vincent V — 11 Dec 2008
A very strange and unusual film, but a great one. The story follows Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), an American singer/dancer who is presently living in Germany in 1931. A young British man (Michael York) is new in town, and rents a room in a building where Sally is living.
Throughtout the film we see the ups and downs of life, love, freedom, desires, and everything in between. Minnelli gives a dazziling preformance, and her musical numbers are top notch. The same goes for Joel Grey, who won a well-deserved Oscar for his preformance as the creepy, mysterious, and marionette-like Master of Ceremonies.
The film is topped off with the exceptional direction by Bob Fosse who, like Minnelli and Grey, won a deserved Oscar for his fine work. Not a film for everybody, but you won't know until you have seen it with your own eyes.
