Review of Cabaret (1981) by Niall M — 16 Feb 2008
Ok, it's not "All That Jazz." Liza Minelli isn't piece o'ace that every single female character in the newer Fosse film is. But Liza is irristiblly likeable and the many musical numbers are all funny and broadwaytastic.
Michael York makes sense in the bi-sexual Brit and the Jewish/Nazi subplot doesn't hurt. The story does have some problems with things not going anywhere. Liza's character arc is circular and the war mrerely looms, the backdrop needing to manifest itself larger.
