Review of Cabaret (1981) by Barbara O — 11 Apr 2008
I quite appreciate cabaret as a film, as a drama depicting the roaring 20s, in whose background the fascist storm is already brewing. I'm not the biggest fan of musicals and didn't not care for the songs too much, although they reflected nicely on the storyline. minnelli and especially grey are great and I like brenson, but hated york, uh, what a wooden performance. additionally I thought the camera was doing strange things at times and the editing sometimes cut off scenes and music, which I find quite annoying particularly in a musical. all in all good depicition of the feeling on the edge before catastrophe stroke.
Ps. why did minnelli never try another look? I don't wanna b*tch about her and her personal problems, but her short, black hair, which as I can see she's had (almost?) all the time since then, make her look like an old, somewhat sad version of long gone fame, when you watch this film and her almost iconic role in it.
