Review of Cabaret (1981) by Martin T — 22 Jul 2008
Fosse's film about decadence in 1931 Berlin, under the shadow of the rise of Nazism. Everything about it is great -- the performances, the song and dance, the stylization, the emotional content, the juxtapositioning, the depth of the screenplay.
However, I had hoped for something as magnificent as All That Jazz, and it just misses the mark. It lacks the same level of energy and intensity. I had also hoped there would be more musical numbers, or that they would be more elaborately staged.
