Review of Cabaret (1981) by James H — 28 Jun 2009
Now I am well known for loving musicals but I have to be honest, this is one of my least liked, to be fair ive never been much of a liza minelli fan (im sorry but this is bout the only time she could sing).
To get a better understanding of the film you cant just watch the main action, you have to watch the background as well, as the bac kground characters normally tell a better story than the bloody mains!
Now I hear you ask why did I give this film a moderate amount of stars, well the answer is easy, Joel Grey. Joel Grey in this film plays the part of The Emcee, and in my opnion is the only thing that saves the film, his songs tell more of the plot than the film and his fantastic representation of The Emcee remains one of the best versions of the character, sometimes its good enough to watch the film just to watch his performance (but fast forward everthing else).
Overall to be fair a rather boring film in places, but Joel Grey's The Emcee saves the film quite a few times.
