Review of Cabaret (1981) by Maggie N — 04 Jul 2009
The film adaptation is interesting, but obviously not as good as the actual musical it's based on. The Kit Kat Club and musical sequences are not as integrated into the movie as smoothly as they could have been.
The Kit Kat Club doesn't come off as a huge part of Sally's life as it was in the musical. Although Brian's ambiguous sexuality is explained much better in the film than in the musical. (I might be wrong, but it seems as if he only intimated he was gay in passing and still slept with Sally in the musical, which seemed strange to me.
) Overall I thought it was entertaining, and the message came off very well that Sally wasn't quite ready to grow up, although I think Brian's reason for leaving and Sally's reason for staying should have also been given more presence.
All of this was explained in the musical.
