Review of Cabaret (1981) by Jason B — 08 Jul 2009
This is perhaps one of the most unique films ever created. It is also one of my favorite films of all time. It presents a dark look on society, and revolves around a singer/actress/dancer, Sally Bowl (Liza Minnelli). The songs are memorable, and the acting is stupendous. Furthermore, the director Bob Fosse, uses certain camera lens that give the film a grim look.
Acting: Liza Minnelli, gives the performance of her life in this film. Her struggle between love and success is so touching and well--upsetting. Her voice, well it's Liza Minnelli for god sakes, and she sings songs like Mein Herr. Joel Grey, who plays the MC at the night club, is haunting and provides memorable songs such as "Money". Michael York, who I'm not a huge fan of, did a very good job in this film playing as a bisexual lover.
Songs: I'm sorry to say this, but you will have these songs stuck in your head for days following. If I were to classify them, I would say they are jazzy pieces of music.
This film is unique, and modern for it's time. It's implicit theme deals with controversial ideas, and ends not to happy. This is a classic and it gave Godfather a run for it's money for Best Picture.
