Review of Cabaret (1981) by John S — 30 Dec 2009
Influential three-alarm musical of a love triangle set in early 1930s Germany under the spectre of a rising Nazi party.
Told through the eyes of a cabaret singer (Liza Minelli) and her English lodger/ lover (Michael York) the story is heat-inducing and director/ choreographer Bob Fosse delivers the goods: belting music ('Life is a Cabaret'); top-drawer dancing; and performances on which we can't help but fixate.
Minelli is flammable as the larger-than-life Sally Bowles -- earning an Oscar for her effort -- and York more than keeps up as the heat rises on the protagonists and a society sleepwalking into annihilation.
