I give very few 5-star reviews, but this movie gets one. I normally hate musicals (having working in theater for a bunch of years can make one jaded), but this one wasn't what I'd call a musical. Yes, there are musical numbers, but all but one of them take place in the theatre and the one that doesn't is a totally believable presentation in a cafe.

The dialogue can be a little maddening at times compared to modern drama or even modern interpersonal communication (Sally comes home extremely upset but Brian doesn't even ask her why -- some friend!), and some of the direction is a little psychedelic, but it was the early 70s and Fosse wasn't doing anything a lot of other directors were doing.

I avoided this film for years thinking it was going to be another vapid musical, but it has depth, character and a compelling story.
