Review of Cabaret (1981) by Michael C — 07 Mar 2011
A fun movie with some solid acting and catchy musical numbers, but I think putting it on the AFI list of 100 Greatest Films is overrating it quite a bit. The story of a struggling cabaret performer's obsession with fame and the hardships she brings on herself and also is brought onto her by the times (early days of Nazi Germany) is interesting but much of the ideas of this plot have been expressed in many other films since then.
However the one scene that stands out is the young Aryan Nazi boy singing and bringing everyone to sing with pride is a scene that is still effectively chilling and uncomfortable even today.
