Here's the thing, right. All the women in this film are, well, real. The chrous girls have got real tits (some of them, let's face it, not so great). Liza Minelli's thigh actually quivers as she slams her foot up on the stool.
No way they'd get away with that these days. No feminine-softness-with-a-suggestion-of-cellulite allowed these days; they'd all be plastic, blown up, lean-muscled Barbies - and the worse for it.
