It doesn't bear a complete resemblence to either the original play or the original literature by Christopher Isherwood...

But it DOES tell a story that is worth watching. Fosse's artistry shines through, as it provides the perfect setting for these glorious performers to do their own shining. It's like a gemstone and each of the components that make up the movie are the different facets of the jewel. It is a good thing that Liza Minnelli won the Oscar for this movie because none of the films she did after it could have made it happen for her. It isn't that she is a bad actress; because she is not. It is just that she was never able to choose a script that would take her or her character to the places this one did.

It is a stunning piece of cinematic artwork.
