Review of Cabaret (1972) by Debi T — 05 Oct 2008
I don't know if it was a good story or a bad story. It just seemed to be a useless story. Contrary to what critics may believe, because a movie is about sex & world war 2, does not make it great (cf. sophie's choice).
The movie has homosexuality, abortion, & jewish persecution. Therefore it is by default one of the greatest movies ever made to the critic. If it had any one of those it would be deemed ground-breaking...this one has ALL THREE!!!
The only reason I give it more than half a star is because of some of the performances, some of the music, costume design, cinematography & the metaphor of life as cabaret were all somewhat interesting (but only barely).
The rise of naziism aspect was singularly interesting, however. It reminded me of some of the political movements happening today. Especially with the frenzied adulation of a single man who is restoring "true" patriotism to his people, as well as the rich focus on "tomorrow" and the future & restoring the nation to what it once was & is destined to be. Extremely interesting parallels there.
Other than that, it pretty much bored me.
