Review of Byzantium (2013) by J D — 19 Jul 2013
Whenever Neil Jordan does horror, you have expectations. Like with his previous efforts (interview with a vampire and Company of wolves) Byzantium draws you in and takes you on a magical mystery ride through beautiful scenery and a flow of storytelling that makes my head light and my heart sing.
Byzantium was like watching a beautiful painting come to life and while it did drag a little in places, it took me away from myself and into dream land. With stunning performaces from Gemma arterton and Saoirse Ronan, and with very commendable mentions to Caleb Landry Jones.
Daniel Mays, Sam Riley and Tom Hollander. And of course, a truly despicable performance by Jonny Lee Miller( one of his best roles ever), Byzantium is just a true breath of fresh air to the vampire sub-genre.
It doesn't do much new, but it feels like it's going in the right direction.
