Review of Byzantium (2013) by Roy S — 17 Jul 2013
You get glimpses of who director Neil Jordan is, hints of the guy who made terrific films like Mona Lisa and The Crying Game, but not a lot and not much else in this toothless thriller ironically about vampires, a secret shared by a good girl teen (Saoirse Ronan) and a prostitute (Gemma Arterton) who is also her guardian.
Arterton is the best thing about the film, she's sultry and quite the scary creature of the night, but mostly Byzantium is just a soft-around-the-edges take on Let The Right One In, probably the last great vampire film ever made.
