Review of Byzantium (2013) by Gordon B — 01 Sep 2013
A movie that throws away and yet thrives on tradition of the vampire lore and instead stays grounded in reality which in turn allows it to become so much more than just another generic vampire flick. The mother/daughter relationship between Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton is both beautiful as it is frightening and you can truly tell they care for one another even after all the bloodshed and murder.
Extremely atmospheric, as one should expect from a Neil Jordan film, and executing the horror elements to great degree, Byzantium is an exciting breath of fresh air for the vampire saga that succeeds thanks to its lead performers and atmospheric mood.
