Review of Byzantium (2013) by Drago? C — 07 Oct 2013
The best vampire movie in a long while, Byzantium is classy, gory and well acted. Ronan is stunning and Gemma Arterton gives the best performance of any movie I've ever seen her in. Some of the supporting actors are equally good and flesh out a realistic environment for a fantastic tale. The colour symbolism is a bit on the nose as is the movie's feminist core message but this enhances rather than taking away from the story.
My only problem with the movie is that, much like in Interview, there is very little horror. The action moves really slowly and there is very little at stake on the screen at any point in the movie. The action picks up towards the end but in an unsatisfying way, and with a deus ex machina denouement.
Byzantium is an incredible movie and, in my opinion, vastly superior to Jordan's previous vampire oeuvre, Interview. Looking forward to see if he can turn this hit into a comeback.
