Review of Byzantium (2013) by Heather M — 01 Jan 2014
Byzantium is one of those films that has many moments of brilliance, but the whole film is never brilliant in itself. Its narrative is vague and uninteresting, but the original take on vampirism is certainly intriguing.
The film also does get quite boring in places, since the film isn't very interesting at times. Though a lackluster story is a glaring flaw, the film also has plenty of redeeming qualities. The performances from Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan are appropriately chilling, the film has a syrup thick atmosphere throughout and the production design and cinematography are astounding.
Byzantium is never as good as it could have been, but it certainly is more satisfying than recent fantasy/horror films.
