Review of Byzantium (2013) by John Eric D — 18 May 2015
A complex and original addition to the modern vampire genre. While the film struggles to develop its many complex plot points, Neil Jordan has done a good job setting a calm, yet eerie, atmosphere. This mood has the fault of occasionally making the plot a bit slow and boring, but he demonstrates his skills at creating complex, charming scenes nonetheless.
Byzantium gives us an interesting, varied cast of characters, all of which could have possibly benefited from more background and screen-time. The ending is satisfying and bittersweet, but might have done well with an epilogue.
Overall, a cool and meditative addition to a movie genre long thought overdone. It ponders the consequences of eternal life while still finding room to give its audience a fresh perspective of both the past and the present.
