Review of By the Sea (2015) by Bud B — 17 Nov 2015
I am not a fan of A.J. nor a fan of B.P. and I did not intend to watch this movie because I follow their work. I really think the critics I read are so unfair, that I'm going to give 5 stars even if it probably deserves only 4.
The set, costumes, make-up, and photography are stunning.
The direction is interesting, with some interesting choices, like the frequent use of mirrors to show detachment.
The scripture, could have been a little more dense, with more details and more lines, and this makes the movie a little slow, for those who are not used to watch good movies without explosions every 2 seconds, but it's not so slow to become boring. Definitely enjoyable, but could have been better.
The acting is flawless, the lack of lines is compensated by the richness of both's interpretations.
The plot is quite simple, easy to follow with a good climax.
The main charachters are profound and complete, the other couple could have been a little more explored, but still good portrayed.
The dramatic topic is told with the gentleness it deserves. It's visible how the whole idea came out of A. mind while she was facing her personal struggle with the cancer issue, and with the consequences of her choices.
Yep, they are gorgeous, rich, successful and good actors/director. Deal with it.
It's worth the money.
And if you leave the cinema one hour before the end, you shouldn't judge the movie, because you are judging the first half, and nobody cares about a review of half a movie.
