Review of By the Sea (2015) by Rick G — 06 Dec 2016
I think that the movie has a twist I don't see. IMO the movie couple are reaaly just characters in the Book he is writing. That what I thought, if you watch the beginning and the end. Granted it could have been made clearer but that's how I saw it.
Now it is long and slow for many people but the movie has many good points, it is visually beautiful and there are so many people have described it I will not repeat. Yes it is an Art House type movie not for everyone.
Look again how the beginning and the end play out, true only for a few minutes. She watched the boat but that's how he he ended the book. They had small smiles at the beginning and the end too if you watch close, they never smiled (hardly) in the movie.
A write does not take a small tablet to a Cafe to get ideas, that is an Artist, a Writer uses that type-writer which he was doing at the beginning and the end of the movie. That's why it went to the completed book and he ended the book talking about the fisherman going with the tide.
I could be wrong here but this is how I saw the movie but you have to watch all the way to the last 2 minutes then put it together with the opening of the movie.
