Review of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) by Roman R — 30 Mar 2010
Next time an underachieving filmmaker (I'm looking at you, Kevin Smith) wants to defend a bad movie by saying it's meant to be popcorn fare, I hope he or she remembers "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" before uttering a word.
This is a flawless film that shows a good movie can be fun at every turn, yet still care enough to put effort into things like story, dialogue, pacing, camera work and performances. Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore, ones with patient editing that allows actors to interact instead of posing for close-ups that cut back and forth every two seconds.
Everyone in this picture, from actors to cinematographers was at the top of their game in 1969. A real joy to watch.
