Review of But I'm a Cheerleader (2000) by Brandon V — 20 Sep 2009
It probably doesn't deserve 4 stars, but I was charmed. It's a razor-sharp and witty satire of the ex-gay movement, and the dichotomous gender roles and pseudoscience that they peddle to lost gay teenagers (and adults).
Yet while it is very funny, it isn't afraid to treat its subject with heart and seriousness when the story deserves it. These types of camps do really exist, after all, and they ruin lives and cause serious psychological damage in the name of bigotry and misguided faith.
Oh, and all the boys involved in the story are really really cute. :-p.
