Review of Burying the Ex (2014) by Dan H — 15 Sep 2015
Max (Anton Yelchin) is a horrorhound who works at a pretty cool horror store but is tied to an incredibly hot but hard to deal with and controlling girlfriend named Evelyn (Ashley Greene), before he can break up with her she is hit by a bus and dies.
You'd think that would be the end of his troubles but alas, Evelyn rises from the dead, dead set on til death do us part. While Max struggles to find a way to deal with his ex, he starts seeing the cute Olivia (Alexandra Daddario), which naturally Evelyn doesn't take too kindly too.
This film is fairly bad. I really dig Anton Yelchin and Alexandra Daddario's characters (and the fact that Max kind of reminded me of me in a weird way), and I love where Max works and the numerous horror influences the film has.
...unfortunately, that's not enough to save it. The script (by Alan Trezza) is all kinds of awful, the story never goes anywhere cool, and Oliver Cooper has a painfully annoying role as a grown up version of his character from Project X.
The film is oddly fun at certain points, but these moments never last very long and there is a good deal of genuinely disgusting and gross-out moments. While Anton Yelchin works hard and manages to almost make something out of nothing, Burying The ex is still a super juvenile, immature, and gross film that is directed by a man who deserves far better, Joe Dante.
