Review of Burnt by the Sun (1994) by Isaac Z — 26 Jan 2010
Among the best movies ever made, in my humble opinion! There is such perfect harmony in all the elements of this film and how they come together. Fantastic acting by everyone, humor, tragedy, love, innocence and the loss of innocence, fate, happiness, idealism - it all comes together into one story.
You must see it to understand. On the other hand, I don't think that all people will "get" this movie fully. Some familiarity with the historical setting and background will go a long ways in helping one to really "understand" everything that this film is about.
Just search for "Stalin's repressions" in Wikipedia and read (or at least scan) through the article on the topic before watching this movie. It's worth it! And I highly highly recommend this film to everyone.
A must see!
