Review of Burning Palms (2010) by David M — 19 Feb 2012
"Five Stories That Will Mess You Up For Life." More like, "Five stories that will put you to sleep".
Billed as a black comedy & done in a Tales from the Crypt/graphic novel style this film was neither subversive or "taboo" OR funny, its just done in poor taste:
Story 1 was about a wife who kills herself when she finds out her husband has a sexual attraction towards his daughter, Story 2 was about a girl who goes crazy after she stuck her finger up her bf's bum during sex, Story 3 was about 2 gay men who adopt a 7 yr old African girl only to abandon her in the woods after she calls them "faggots," Story 4 was about a maid who kills herself after some spoiled, violence-obsessed boys steal her dead baby's umbilical cord & Story 5 was about a lonely woman who gets raped on Christmas only to find the rapist & stalk him. With Dylan McDermott, Nick Stahl & Shannen Doherty as a child psychiatrist with an awful Brit accent.
These stories had no point and despite the horrific outcomes, were misogynistic/tedious/boring. With nudity, graphic sex. Clearly a film written by & for 12 yr old boys.
