Review of Burlesque (2010) by Christal D — 16 Oct 2011
It's like the team of writing consultants was made up entirely of the producers' 13-year-old daughters and Cher's hair and makeup team. The story follows a basic "wide-eyed girl comes to the big city" template but then even gets lazy with that, failing to capitalize on potential for juicy "All About Eve"-type showbiz rivalry plots or forbidden romances with sordid, soapy consequences.
Instead, bizarrely, the plot turns on some real estate loophole involving "air rights," and everyone is friends with each other at the end for no good reason. As for the song-and-dance numbers, they're fun and eye-catching enough, but since there's one every five seconds and about 25 of the songs have the word "Burlesque" in the lyrics, they all run together like cheap dime-store glitter makeup.
